The Gypsy caravan or wagon, more properly called a vardo, is a fully functional and often ornate home on wheels. Traditionally pulled by a single horse (typically a Gypsy Vanner or Cob), it opens out with steps in the back, turning it into a little house when camp is reached. There is often a stove inside, room to sleep several, and the kind of efficient storage found in a boat or today's RVs.
I've found two people in the UK (I'm sure there are many more) who build and restore caravans for horse show and recreational use. Suggestions for new uses include as an artist's or writer's private backyard workspace.
Gypsy Caravans UK sells vardos and has fun photos on their website.
Nick Dow also builds vardos, and has interior and exterior photos on his site.
Scuola di Atene on Flickr has some really nice photos of Gypsy life, including the one shown here.
